Purpose and goals

The course is designed to cut the number of incidents and accidents plus the ship’s downtime by addressing potential human errors as well as watch keeping arrangements and procedures.

With focus on the human factor the purpose is to reduce the number of errors and the consequences of the errors that are made anyhow. The participants are provided with tools to improve teamwork, communication, management, decision-making and resource management. The participants will learn to understand how these BTM skills contribute to redundancy and increased safety.

The course provides understanding and training of the Bridge Team Management concept.

It is an intensive course that sets focus on watch keeping procedures and behavior when the contingencies changes. The course provides the participant with effective tools which can be used in improving personal skills and the performance of the team as well.

Target group

The course intended for bridge officers on any kind of vessels.

Content

Human factors and how the ships safe and efficient operation is effected by the individual behaviour and the interaction in the team are addressed through theory classes and practical cases.

• Near miss, incidents and accidents
• Communication methods, perception, inquisitive technique
• Team balance, assertiveness, flexibility
• Stress effects and stress signals
• Situation assessment and decision making
• Principles and practice of planning
• Efficient communication
• Management functions

Preceding qualifications

Preferably the course participants are to uphold certificates on their respective positions on board.

Other remarks

The course is conducted as interplay between theoretical presentations and supervised training in a Full Mission Bridge Simulator.

The simulators at SIMAC are capable of simulating the total shipboard operation situation. The specific exercises, scenarios and the configuration of simulators are adjusted according to the service experience of the participants.

Each course normally consists of 6 deck officers put together to make up two teams with one Master each.

The course meets the STCW v. 2011 code section A-II/1 and A-II/2.

A Certificate of Achievement will be awarded on satisfactory completion of the course.
